Back in 2013, I was out of a job, my daughter had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at the age of 11 and I was living in a 600sq ft apartment. I knew I had to change something and in the spring of 2013, I made my mind up to do someting about it.
I didn’t always have a love for cooking, nor did I really care too much about it. I often struggled to make ends meet relying on food pantries to stretch my money. When my daughter was diagnosed with CKD things had to change. We had to eat better and think more about food. We started on this local food movement and it was amazing! All this fresh, local food we could buy or go gather in the fields ourselves! I became obsessed! So much in fact, I started teaching myself how to preserve foods at home to make things stretch.
Well as you can guess, one thing lead to another and here we are today. I have had to move into a bigger place with a bigger kitchen, become certified with the state of New Hampshire to process foods and get insurance. Whew! Lots of hard work, but I made it happen.
The name Little River Pantry came about from the Little River so named after the river that runs through the town of Kingston, NH where I originally started my home business. Pantry was used for my appreication of having food banks/pantries available to help me through the lean times. And so, Little River Pantry was born.
Little River Pantry is now located in the beautiful mill town of Newmarket, NH. My home sits right on the Lamprey River (I can literally throw a stone out my window and hit the water its so close). It is there that I work in my kitchen creating amazing jams, jellies and other gourmet preserved goods for your culinary delight. Many of the recipes are my own, some are borrowed and some, well those are top secret. I will just leave it at that.
So please, join me on my journey to discovering the wonderful world of canning and making preserves. Last year I wrote this passage on how I view the art of canning. I hope you enjoy it!
